Ready For A "SAFE@Home"
Home Assessment ? What You Can Expect From An Aging In Place Assessment No matter our current age or ability, changes in health and/or unexpected events can occur that impact how we go about our lives, customarily defined as “Activities Of Daily Living.” To anticipate such occurences, a "SAFE@Home" Home Assessment will provide valuable insights to help individuals, especially older adults, live comfortably and safely in their homes. The goal of an aging-in-place assessment is to help individuals discover ways and find opportunities within their physical environment to support their independence and enhance autonomy. |
“Safe Spaces and Secure Places Are The Perfect Homes”
|
— The objectives are clear: To provide recommendations aimed at empowering the resident to continue performing daily activities by highlighting areas where accessibility can be improved or identifying safety hazards. And in a detailed look, to plan and to create their spaces and places using good design techniques and practices while avoiding an “institutional” appearance.
— The benefits are real: Making proactive modifications to the home based on the assessment can potentially save money in the long run. Preventing accidents and injuries can reduce medical expenses and the need for emergency interventions. And research has shown living in a familiar and comfortable environment can have positive effects on mental health and overall life satisfaction.
A professional assessment considers the individual's specific needs and uses them as a guide. This personalized approach ensures that recommendations are tailored to the person's unique requirements, promoting a higher level of comfort and functionality.
Here are some benefits of having a "Safe @ Home" Home Assessment:
• Safety Is One Important Step
Falls are particularly detrimental as we get older. So by identifying potential safety hazards, such as uneven flooring, poor lighting, or tripping hazards, we can identify what changes may be needed to reduce the risk of accidents and falls. The assessment can suggest improvements such as better lighting, non-slip flooring or installing balance bars.
• Make It Easy On Yourself
Many simple modifications ( inside - or out ) can make it easier for individuals with mobility challenges to navigate their homes independently now and in the future. The assessment can highlight areas where accessibility can be improved upon such as wider doorways, using handles instead of knobs or installing taller toilets.
• Planning To Stay In Place
Since life changes without a moment’s notice, the assessment might suggest flexible design features that allow for easy adaptation of living spaces as one’s needs change over time. This can include adjustable countertops, lever-style door handles, incorporating technology that accommodates people with varying levels of mobility. An assessment can also help individuals and their families plan for the future by suggesting long-term solutions. This may include considerations for changes in health, in mobility, and in lifestyle.
Assessments may also address factors beyond the home itself, such as the proximity of essential services, community resources, and social opportunities. This holistic approach considers the individual's overall well-being and connectedness to the community.
For family members or caregivers, knowing that the home has been assessed and if needed, modified to meet the needs of the aging individual, can provide stability and peace of mind. It can also alleviate concerns about the person's safety and well-being.

• It’s Easy To Start Moving Forward.
With a request for an appointment, we can plan a visit to your place - in person or virtually. We’ll tour and take pictures. We’ll also talk about current and future needs. And once we’ve completed a walk-thru of your space, we compile notes and thoughts into a list of recommendations, which will help you prioritize what actions should come first and how best to implement the concepts.
A SAFE@Home home assessment offers a comprehensive evaluation of a living environment, focusing on safety, accessibility, and personal needs. It provides actionable recommendations to support individuals in aging comfortably and independently in their own houses and homes, condos and apartments….
those places and spaces we all call home.
• What Does It Cost?
The Safe@Home Assessment costs far less than a stay in the hospital. We usually base our assessments on size of the home... beginning at $500 for a small single family residence or condominium.
So what are the next steps? We first interview you in person ( or virtually ) about your life and lifestyle and what challenges should be considered as time move forward. We want to see the spaces so when practical, we can visit your home. But we are just as successful at virtual consultations, and by sharing pictures and videos, we can easily start the process.
Once we compile the details, we create a written report about what next steps should be considered. Think of your SAFE@Home Assessment as a road map to making your home a safe and secure place to age in place, sustaining your quality of life.... for now and in the future.
